225.  A c. 1780-1800 antique metacarpal saw as designed by Dr. Bell.

226.   A dated 1917 World War I U.S. Army surgeon's uniform that belonged to Dr. Francis A. Stiles.   The jacket has sew-on USR and medical corps devices, and pin-on 1st lieutenant bars.

227.   A c. 1945 Bulova one-button chronometer as used by doctor's to determine a pulse rate.  The control for setting, starting, and stopping the sweeping second hand is built within the crown.  The handsome 10K rolled-gold case has horn-shaped lugs, a popular style in the 1940s.

228.   A 1935 Royal Lifesaving Society silver medal, Award of Merit. Well made in typical high-quality, British silversmith style and marked.  One side depicts a rescue and the other side shows Victory with a garland and is neatly engraved: H. E. Wilson 1935.

229.   A c. 1880 Tobold’s concealed laryngeal trocar lancet. See Tiemann 1889, p. 267, fig. 2487.

230.   A pewter antique medicine spoon marked J & S MAW / LONDON.  The medical instrument maker Maw went by the name J. & S. Maw from c. 1828 to c. 1860.  The device, known as the Gibson medicine spoon, was invented by Charles Gibson in 1827, and he was given a Society of Arts award  for its design in 1828.  To read an 1842 description of this special spoon, please see this link (bottom of p. 377 and the top of p. 378).  Note that one advantage offered by the Gibson's medicine spoon was the placement of bad tasting medicines, such as castor oil, to the back of the tongue and beyond the taste buds.  SOLD

231.  An antique 1950s doctor cookie jar with base marked Japan.  The doctor is very plump (the better to hold lots of cookies) and stands 13" high.  Could this have inspired some child to go into medicine?

232.  A fine pair of c. 1890 antique clinical thermometers by F. Darton, London, in their original leather case.  The exquisite set includes an axilla (bent) and an oral thermometer.
